About SkyeDance and what we do

The SkyeDance Story so far

A dream by a group of dance enthusiasts in 2004 became a reality with the appointment of our Dance Development Manager Lorayne McLucas in 2006. Thanks to all our funders past & present – The Scottish Arts Council, Highland Council, Leader, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Roberston Trust, RJ MacLeod and Amec without whom it would not have been possible to make this vision became a reality.

Guided and supported by the SkyeDance Committee, Lorayne began with gusto identifying local teachers, local groups, remote communities where dance classes had never previously been offered. Very quickly, and with much hard work, she has created a very positive image for dance with a huge number of people, of all ages, taking part. Classes have been organised/run/held in Ballet, Highland Tap, Step, Modern, Bollywood, Salsa, Contemporary and Egyptian, with new ones emerging all the time. Assistance was given to already established classes such as the Skye Branch of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society and the Ceilidh dance groups. Lorayne responded to demand from young people to include a wide variety of styles – hip hop, contemporary, jazz and Street dance. This is, indeed something to celebrate! In addition to encouraging young talent to study Dance as a career, there are on-going partnership activities with others such as Eden Court, active schools, professional touring companies as well as choreographing enterprise projects such as De an-diugh, a Gaelic nursery rhyme DVD for pre-school children. Opportunities created & pursued.

This is just a snapshot of what SkyeDance has achieved in Skye and Lochalsh! There is so much more happening each day and the more we achieve, the more we recognise how much untapped potential there is in the area.

SkyeDance has built up an excellent reputation for its work and is considered an exemplar for dance development at community level.
